# Three Impossible Theories

@inproceedings{Susskind2021ThreeIT, title={Three Impossible Theories}, author={Leonard Susskind}, year={2021} }

I will begin by conjecturing a cosmological generalization of black hole complementarity (also known as the central dogma). I will then discuss three theories and argue that they are inconsistent with second law of thermodynamics if the cosmological version of the dogma is correct. The three theories are: the big rip; cyclic cosmology; and the Farhi-Guth-Guven mechanism for creating inflating universes behind black hole horizons. ar X iv :2 10 7. 11 68 8v 1 [ he pth ] 2 4 Ju l 2 02 1

The Grand Canonical Multiverse and the Small Cosmological Constant

- Physics
- 2021

We consider the Multiverse as an ensemble of universes. Using standard statistical physics analysis we get that the Cosmological Constant (CC) is exponentially small. The small and finite CC is… Expand

Three postulates asserting the validity of conventional quantum theory, semiclassical general relativity, and the statistical basis for thermodynamics are introduced as a foundation for the study of… Expand

The cyclic universe: An informal introduction

- Physics
- 2003

Abstract The Cyclic Model is a radical, new cosmological scenario which proposes that the Universe undergoes an endless sequence of epochs which begin with a ‘big bang’ and end in a ‘big crunch.’… Expand

Eternal black holes in anti-de Sitter

We propose a dual non-perturbative description for maximally extended Schwarzschild Anti-de-Sitter spacetimes. The description involves two copies of the conformal field theory associated to the AdS… Expand

Quantization of false-vacuum bubbles: A Hamiltonian treatment of gravitational tunneling.

- Physics, Medicine
- Physical review. D, Particles and fields
- 1990

The quantization of spherically symmetric gravitational systems using the Dirac formalism and the WKB approximation is developed for the nucleation of false-vacuum bubbles, which may have been the origin of the inflationary universe and matter. Expand

Is it possible to create a universe in the laboratory by quantum tunneling

- Physics
- 1990

Abstract We explore the possibility that a new universe can be created by producing a small bubble of false vacuum. The initial bubble is small enough to be produced without an initial singularity,… Expand

Phantom Energy and Cosmic Doomsday

- Physics

Cosmologists have long wondered whether the Universe will eventually re-collapse and end with a Big Crunch, or expand forever, becoming increasingly cold and empty. Recent evidence for a flat… Expand
